a quickie movie reviews

The fact that I can write snippets about so many of them at one go is a testimony of me watching too many movies this month . Here goes:
Ah Long Pte Ltd (rating: 5/5)
This is a MUST WATCH! The creatively funny scenes and punch lines (hint: ah gua, mother, pregnant) will sent you over the edges, make you stomp your foot and cry with laughter. Loved the revamp way of chasing loan money. Be prepared to be blasted by super *rojak* language though.
Strongly recommmended for people who is feeling a little suicidal.
Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears A Who? (Rating: 4.5/5)
There’s nothing new about the idea itself but they did a good job putting it in perspective. Jim Carrey-esque style of comedy will not fail you when it comes to tickle your funny bone. More often than not the adults were laughing harder than the kiddos. Really love the small furry animal… can’t remember her name.

Good for any sort of age groups, at anytime. Just avoid going to the same cinema with babies (as if they really know how to watch the show).

The Spiderwick Chronicles (3/5)
It was kind of childish, really. Fun, nonetheless. Expect the normal magic, fairies, evil ogres, tunnels, a much sought after artefact (in this case, a book), with ordinary plots. The graphics are quite OK, and I kept wondering if those 2 boys are actually twins, or real-life brothers. Frankly, I have seen better fantasy movies.

Watch it if you are in the mood for some brilliant colours and fairytale.

An Empress and The Warriors (2.5/5)

I don’t see Kelly Chan’s acting improving, Leon Lai is fat now, and Donnie Yen is nothing but a side-kick. The idea of why men resist so hard to hand over the in-charge position to women is totally emphasized here – she will just drop everything and run away with her lover. And the love matching KL and LL is just wrong (somehow)!

Only to pay tribute to the beautifully manufactured armour.

Vanished (-1/5)
I chose this movie instead of Shutter because I have seen the Jap version. I should have stick with Shutter. This movie aims to confuse you with bad story telling screenshots, seduce you with not so handsome or pretty lead roles, and lullaby you to sleep with a long and dreary puppy love story (who could have those kind of long-lasting feelings at 12?) The scariest bit came when a cockroach flew over me.
Don’t. Just don’t. Please just go watch the reruns of ‘The Eye’. *shriek

Vietnamese Kitchen @ Jaya 33

One fine noon, my colleagues decided to check out the new Jaya33 building and have lunch there – that’s why we went to the Vietnamese Kitchen situated at the ground floor. (Jaya33 is a new commercial building which dubbed themselves as “The Hyperoffice” that uniquely combines office & showroom capabilities.)

It was packed with people and we had to wait for about 10 minutes before we were seated. It wasn’t a big restaurant, and the sound proof mustn’t have been good because the chatter of the diners actually make the whole restaurant abuzz with echoing sounds! Not that it affected the quality of the food in any case…

You *must try* the beef noodles! I mean, just look at the chunks of beef swimming lazily inside the pipping hot flavoursome soup! The tribes could be a little softer but I’m not complaining.

Mind you, all the portions are BIG! If you are not a big eater, do share your food with your girlfriend or just give some to your guy friends haha.

Sea coconut and red dates – just nice


My fave – basil drink. Really refreshing on a hot sunny afternoon.

And for the first time since I write reviews, there’s an actual map! Albeit with chock full of typo errors…

All in all, the food is generally tasty and although the service is a-ok only, I’d still recommend you to go and have a try! It’s not that expensive anyway.

Kiku Zakura Japanese Restaurant @ Mid Valley

While milling around in Mid Valley, ASL & me chanced upon this restaurant on the top floor, next to the Vietnamese restaurant. When we walked into this restaurant, a face-all-painted-up-geisha-lookalike-waitress greeted us at the entrance with a fake Japanese accented English. Mann, that face! Gave me a fright! (I tried to surreptitiously take pictures of her but failed… because she was always surrounded by other geisha-lookalike-waitresses)

So we got seated and been presented the menu. The set list that they’ve got is really amazing! Tons & tons of sets to choose from. Too many choices sometimes are a bad choice.

First came the *free* appetizer – Jellyfish, some shellfish and octopus. So-so only.

ASL ordered the tempura udon & gyoza set. It’s normal, not too salty, not too tasteless.


I love this type of egg though…

I had the beef sukiyaki set. It was tooooooo salty that should I didn’t take rice with it, I will be completely bald by the time I finish the whole set.

Although the quality of food was so-so and the price is quite expensive, the waitresses were attentive. Give it a go if you run out of ideas to eat and feel like paying a little bit more.

MyElephant Thai Restaurant @ Happy Apartment, Section 17, PJ

This little unassuming Thai restaurant is quite hard to find as it is located in the apartment block itself. On the outlook, it is really nothing. But when you stepped inside, you will be amazed by the interesting and incredibly creative decor! It’s mainly concrete you see, but a little bit of colours here, a tad of creative brick works there, some wood furniture & soft cushions around, make it a very cosy restaurant which you can relax with some friends and have a good dinner.

Ok ok, no more decor talk. On about the food! If you decided to go there, here’s your by default *must try* menu:
- Snow Fish: oven baked with sea salt. Inside, the flesh is soft and with a slight salty taste (obviously… so much salt all over). Be careful not to have any generous amount of sea salt in your mouth!
- Chicken Curry/Pineapple Curry: Take the pineapple curry if you can’t take too spicy food. Both are yummy!
- Chicken Nugget: Better than KFC’s!
- Thai Salad: Any salad of theirs are good, but make sure you ask if they are spicy.
- Tom Kat / Tom Yum Soup: YUMMMYYYY!! The more you drink, the spicier it gets! Woohoo!

Try the special Hibiscus Tea to wash down your food with, very refreshing!

Black Canyon Restaurant @ Centre Point

Last last Tuesday I think… Went to Black Canyon Restaurant with Kamjie & Chin2. They have Thai fusion food and a HUGE ARRAY OF COFFEE that are *to die* for! Don’t order the salad though, not their strength. But their fried stuff are really delicious and their coffee.. yummmyyyy…

Modern European Cuisine @ Bijou, Mont Kiara

Couple weeks ago, actually a month or so ago I happened to stumble across the website for this cute, cosy, feminine little cafe called Bijou @ facebook. (It actually came from an invitation to go for a gathering for dateless people. I of course didn’t go with the gang!)

I like what I saw, so I dragged my aiya-lesbian partner kamjie to go with me to check out this place during mooncake festival. We sat at the alfresco area and although it was situated near some condominiums, it was quiet and when night fell, there was chirping of crickets and croaking of frogs/toads. Honestly I *miss* this nature orchestra where I used to hear during my kampung childhood times.

Anyway, back to the food, we ordered some steamed fish & roast duck. Both were delicious with a huge “D”! The drinks were so-so only… The price, a tad on the high side but hey, I LOVEEEE this place because the ambience is just way too nice!

I would have taken more pictures of Bijou because I love the interior (which I must admit inspired me to give my blog a facelift), however, the waitress wouldn’t allow me. :’(

By the way, they are nice enough to let us have mooncakes at their premises hohohoho~ So the service is A-OK! *winkz*

Chicken Ball Rice, Ee Jin Ban Chicken Rice Ball, Malacca

Now for all the non-Malaccans, who doesn’t want to have chicken rice balls when they’re in Malacca, right? I mean, this particular dish involving people rubbing squeezing squashing perfectly normal rice into a ball-like apparition is *THE* food you have to try when you are in Malacca. (What’s with the fascination of balls anyway?)

And people like us (Malaccans, veteran chicken rice balls eater, etc) are particularly sick of it because it has been so commercialized that the chicken rice balls doesn’t even remotely begin to represent the chicken rice already.

So imagine my delight when my mum brought me to this place – Ee Jin Ban Chicken Rice Ball, and I discovered dang, their chicken rice balls are the quality that we Malaccans are looking for the longest time! (admittedly the name is dodgy)

The first bite of the chicken rice ball makes me felt nostalgia – it has all the goodness of chicken essence soaked up in that one ball. Ok, fine, exaggeration but hey, you’ve got to try it before you understand what I mean.

And the roasted chicken is succulent with a big ‘S’!

Well, in the yonder years chicken rice ball stalls only sell chicken and chicken rice ball. Guess they have to evolve in order to keep up with all the competitions? So anyway, they do sell other side dishes such as stir fry vegetables and sambal sotong and omelette – all of which gave a very ‘home-cook’ feel.

Here’s a little story on how my mum manages to find this little unassuming restaurant. One fine day she has just finished her errands and was standing nearby this little eatery waiting for her ride when the owner of this shop came up to her and asked if she needed any help? Note: He didn’t ask if she wants to eat or anything. He merely extending a helping hand. I mean, where can you find such people anymore right? And the service they have in the restaurant is SUPER STAR!

Ichiban desu Ee Ji Ban Chicken Rice Ball. (sorry, can’t resist the pun! :P )

So quickly make your way down to taste it before it get commercialized! Where is it? Urm… it’s on the row of street after the Maybank which is after Mahkota Parade. Does this makes any sense to anyone? Ok… it’s on the same street as the Malacca Club… Err… I’ll go find out the exact street name & update ok?

Claypot Chicken Rice, Restaurant Busy Corner @ Damansara Jaya

Yes, I know I have been MIA-ing hence there are no posts on KL side on http://www.thelocalking.com… How sad. Aileen, what have you been up to lately eh? :P

Actually even though I haven’t write for some time, I have been secretly (ok, not so secretly) and dutifully (fine, lazily and half-heartedly!) taking pictures of the nice food places I sometimes visited, frequently visited, and have the urge to visit once I saw the advertisement.

So I want to introduce to you one place which I frequently visited with my colleagues – Claypot Chicken Rice at Restaurant Busy Corner @ Damansara Jaya. In fact, we’ve been there like >4 times last month, it’s disgusting how much we like it.

First, the heart-warming boiled soup which you *MUST* try! My personal favourite is the old cucumber soup. Then again, I’m a soup groupie. haha.

Next will be the main dish which we all salivated for: the Claypot Rice! There are several choices which you can choose from: Original*, Tom Yam*, prawn and red bean paste**.

** = never tested = you try & let me know?

How can you resist this?

It is fulled with exploding flavour, as you will know after the first bite you have.

How can we forget the important fibers? Remember to order the pan fried vegetables to balance up your nutrition! They have daily selections of in-season veges.

Best of all, it is not expensive at all! So do give it a go!
