The King’s Mistress

Dreams

Only now, amidst the pouring rain in the evening time, did I remember about my dream this morning.

It was unorthodox, even for me. Usually my dreams are inspired either by my day job or the book/movie I was entertaining myself with right before I fell asleep. And yesterday night I was re-reading John Connolly’s Charlie Parker’s series – Every Dead Thing, a thriller that normally gave me nightmares about ghosts, blood, guns, splattered innards – generally anything gruesome.

Yesterday though, yesterday I dreamt of a dream filled with the most delicious sense of ambiguity and subtlety  of feelings. I felt warm, fuzzy, head over heads in love; I felt jealous, left out, inconspicuous, and neglected.

I was The King’s Mistress.

My feelings are… complicated. He was gentle to me, caring even, and extremely sweet to me. I knew instinctively from the bottom of my heart that he loved me. The way he looked at me, the touch he gave me, and the sweet nothings he whispered to me.

But I was only a mistress, and cannot be compared either in political power or richness to the rightful queen. As our love for each other deepen, so did the jealousy of the queen thickens. I was relegate to a dark, private chamber at the cliff side with only sea waves to accompany me, and I savoir the precious few moments he could stole away to come visit me.

Ah, my non reciprocated love…
