a quickie movie reviews

The fact that I can write snippets about so many of them at one go is a testimony of me watching too many movies this month . Here goes:

Ah Long Pte Ltd (rating: 5/5)

This is a MUST WATCH! The creatively funny scenes and punch lines (hint: ah gua, mother, pregnant) will sent you over the edges, make you stomp your foot and cry with laughter. Loved the revamp way of chasing loan money. Be prepared to be blasted by super *rojak* language though.

Strongly recommmended for people who is feeling a little suicidal.

Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears A Who? (Rating: 4.5/5)

There’s nothing new about the idea itself but they did a good job putting it in perspective. Jim Carrey-esque style of comedy will not fail you when it comes to tickle your funny bone. More often than not the adults were laughing harder than the kiddos. Really love the small furry animal… can’t remember her name.

Good for any sort of age groups, at anytime. Just avoid going to the same cinema with babies (as if they really know how to watch the show).

The Spiderwick Chronicles (3/5)

It was kind of childish, really. Fun, nonetheless. Expect the normal magic, fairies, evil ogres, tunnels, a much sought after artefact (in this case, a book), with ordinary plots. The graphics are quite OK, and I kept wondering if those 2 boys are actually twins, or real-life brothers. Frankly, I have seen better fantasy movies.

Watch it if you are in the mood for some brilliant colours and fairytale.

An Empress and The Warriors (2.5/5)

I don’t see Kelly Chan’s acting improving, Leon Lai is fat now, and Donnie Yen is nothing but a side-kick. The idea of why men resist so hard to hand over the in-charge position to women is totally emphasized here – she will just drop everything and run away with her lover. And the love matching KL and LL is just wrong (somehow)!

Only to pay tribute to the beautifully manufactured armour.

Vanished (-1/5)

I chose this movie instead of Shutter because I have seen the Jap version. I should have stick with Shutter. This movie aims to confuse you with bad story telling screenshots, seduce you with not so handsome or pretty lead roles, and lullaby you to sleep with a long and dreary puppy love story (who could have those kind of long-lasting feelings at 12?) The scariest bit came when a cockroach flew over me.

Don’t. Just don’t. Please just go watch the reruns of ‘The Eye’. *shriek

Whether you like it or not, the whole world has became a place where most urbanites experience a unique sensation – queue-ing up. Be it for food, to get into a sizzling club, for taxi, as long as you live in city, you need to queue up for one thing or another. (Which explains why rich people tend to pay more to skip all these annoying queueing bit.)

Now, since queueing up is part of all urbanites’ life, you would imagine they know the etiquette of queueing up right? Yeah, ok, assume is to make an arse out of you and me so, yeah, I am not assuming, I am hereby declaring that those people who do not know how to queue up are all asses! And I am beginning to think that manners have absolutely nothing to do with the level of education but upbringing of oneself. (Which explains why I have very low opinion on people who cut queue in a traffic jam – you are just a big fat moron who thinks nothing about anyone and everything about yourself).

Let me cite you an example. One fine day when there was a long queue at the immigration in KLIA airport, this tie-suit-guy suddenly waltzed up from no where to the front and pretended to chat with his colleague and then just slipped very comfortably into the line behind her and ignored the rest of the long line behind him. If she is his wife/girlfriend, then fine, I can tolerate that. But no, I think he’s just using her for the queue because I noticed she flinched away a little from him. (Maybe it’s the BO) What an ediot!!! Again, I have to physically restrain myself from hurling abuses to him.

And let me share with you what I 150% hate people to do – bumping into me when they are queueing. Like today, when I was nicely queuing up for food, the woman behind me kept pushing ahead, staying very close behind me, and like a hungry ghost can’t wait to order her food and therefore her stupid bag and her stupid hand kept brushing my arms my bags my elbow and only with a great restrain on my part did I not turn around and screamed at her “STOP PUSHING YOU B!TCH!“

And there’s this one time when this guy stood so close to me that he virtually bumped into me every step I took.

And then there’s this one time when the auntie’s handbag kept slapping my back when she giggled to whatever funny thing her friend said.

What the hell is wrong with these people? RESPECT MY PERSONAL SPACE! I don’t care how long the queue is, or how fat or skinny you are, please refrain from stepping into the 15 inches circumferences around me. You think I’m giving free living tissue to everyone as part of community service project isit? I DO NOT LIKE YOU TOUCHING ME!

For the sake of my eternal sanity, I swear I would scream like a banshee anytime I see anyone cutting queue, bumping into me, or just generally being an uneducated arsehole.

shoes vs Changi Airport

6.30pm
I was chatting excitedly with my colleagues about the current Malaysia politics when “Don’t you have to go to airport now?” somebody asked. Yeah yeah, sure. I got time! My flight’s 8.55pm anyway.

7.40pm
Reached airport due to the massive jam all the way from Orchard Road. But I still got time, no rush! So I slowly walked to the counter…

7.42pm
The stewardness over the counter looked up and had a screwy expression on her face: “Eh Miss, you know your flight is going to leave in 15 mins time?” Eh, this cannot be possible, my flight was 8.55pm what. “No la Miss, you are landing at 8.55pm in KL, but your flight is 8.00pm leh! You have to go in NOW!” *SHIT

7.45pm
Impatiently passed custom, and rushed to the gate when suddenly my legs wobbled, accompanied by a very threatening “CRACKKKkkkkKK” sound. What the f***?! My shoes broke again?! (Note the use of word: again) At Changi Airport again?! (Note the repeated use of word: again) I have no choice but to wobble my feet along as fast as I could with my broken heels lagging behind like a sad little puppy.

++the last time this unfortunate incident of shoe breaking ceremony happened to me 2 weeks prior to this flight. Same airport, same crack sound, same wearer, same brand, different shoes!++

7.55pm
Reached the gate. I felt like I just finish a home run on a baseball field mann! The security guard insisted to throw away my RM100 Skinfood toner because it’s 130ml not 100ml! But I’ve used 1/3 of it already so that makes it less than 100ml right? “Sorry miss, we follow the bottle size.” Oh is it? OH IS IT? That is just absolutely fantabulously great. You know what am I going to do next time? I am going to bring a full bag of 120ml water bottles – some fill with sand, some fill with grits, some fill with water, some fill with whatevers, and you can have ALL OF THEM!

7.57pm
After my futile attempt in getting my toner back, the stewardness smiled, checked my passport and flight ticket when the smart ass air steward standing behind the counter went “Miss Loony, please hurry, your flight is about to take off.” YOU THINK I RUSH WITH MY BROKEN HEELS FOR FUN IS IT? Why don’t you try running while carrying a laptop bag, a handcarry big stupid bag and a handbag with broken heels! MAN!

8.25pm
So halfway during the flight I tried to fix my shoes in the squeezy cabin toilet. You know the Kit Kat TV ads? The one where the girl also had a broken heel, then she had a kit kat and then cooly snapped off the heels so it becomes flat shoes? WALAOEH, I hereby solemnly declared that they LIE! Yeah, I tried breaking off my heels to wear them as flats. And I swear that even if you managed to break that it-only-looks-easy-on-ad-heels, you still cannot wear them because the contour of heels are dramatically differently from flats!

In anycase luckily I have a pair of flats in my luggage but I couldn’t bear to change my shoes in flight in front of everyone because I was so sure my feet will stink from wearing them whole day….

The moral of the story is: I will no longer wear heels in Changi Airport. To bury 2 pairs of my fave pair of heels in the ladies’ bins are more than I could bear. *RIP

sun, surf and beach @ cherating

Nevermind that Cherating is 5 hours away from KL; nevermind that it was last minute notice; nevermind that we have to leave at odd hours; nevermind that I have never surf before – I was going to the famous Cherating Beach!!!!!

So it was at 11.30pm that the 3 crazy folks – Fang, JC & me drove from KL to Cherating. We stopped for gas, for teh tarik, for food, for cigarette breaks – NO WONDER IT TOOK 5 HOURS TO REACH! And when we reached there it’s about… 5am? Just in time to sleep a little with mozzies keeping us company, woke up & then had the famous little shack nasi lemak by the road side.

So the 2 surfer dudes immediately jumped down the sea the moment day breaked. Me? Not in a million bucks will I jumped in the freezing sea water with barely enough sleep to keep my eyelids open and my bones sore enough to rattle (this is from sleeping in the car). So I remained firmly at the beach having a good time sleeping and sun baking. The whole day. *heh heh

The beach itself was… heaven. It was quiet, serene, clean, and not with a lot of people. Best of all, no funky animals like sea gulls or monkeys who just might be interested in my infested left toe.

In anycase, I decided to try surfing the next day. But then my Belly Button Ring stood in the way. No way in hell would JC let me anywhere near his surfboard as long as that ring was in plain sight. What’s a girl got to do when she wants to surf right?

So JC borrowed a spanner from the reception counter and gallantly helped to unscrew my BBR – since I couldn’t unscrew my BBR using my good’ol fingers (a result of never taking it out ever since its planted in) – in full view of the hotel personnels! *there goes my sophisticated image

Ok, now, back to surfing. After the initial fear of ‘will I be swept away by the waves?’ and ‘is my bikini top going to fall off?’ and ‘will my toes be bitten off by a nasty fish?’ I discovered it was really a COOL sport! No wonder people get addicted to it. Thanks to JC who so patiently taught me how to balance myself on the surfboard. *beam*

Come to think about it, the highlight of this trip was that I get to eat really yummy food (stuffed crabs @ StuffCrabs, famous nasi lemak @ Hai Peng, seafood @ Duyong Seafood Restaurant, river prawn noodles @ Bukit Tinggi) and sunbaked till I got a golden tan. Oh, and drooling at the washboard abs of the cute surfers!
